According to an American Bar Association (ABA) survey made available this year titled “Survey Documents Rise of Telecommuting Lawyers“, 71% of ABA members surveyed said that they sometimes telecommute and that they work in a variety of places from their homes to hotels to libraries and courthouses to coffee shops.

Even though less than 1% spend all their time telecommuting, 46% of the respondents say that they spend 10% – 24% working away from the office.

What equipment do they use to while away from their desks at work? 95% of the respondents use computers outside the office, 89% use laptops and 79% use smartphones like Blackberrys.

What are they accessing while out of the office? In a different part of the survey with 806 respondents, they “found online research is among the work being done away from the office.” 35% of the respondents said that they regularly conduct legal research at home which is an increase of 6% from the 2009 survey.
